Description: “In many parts the shores are abrupt, rocky and bold; in others green yet steep, the rocks mostly of a fine dark hue, which I think much more striking than the white Southern cliffs of England.” (Dorothy Wordsworth, Journal of a Tour in the Isle of Man 11th July, 1828, M 10561)
The painting is from a series of works by Mrs Lucy Emma Lynam, born 1834. It is thought that Lucy Emma Lynam painted the works while staying with her daughter and son-in-law on the Isle of Man. Her daughter, also called Lucy Emma, married a Manxman Sidney Alfred Pizey Kermode, who was the Reverend of Onchan (1862-1925).
