Ballure Ramsey

Date made: 1899

Description: “Ballure church on the hill, the burying ground of Ramsey, and formerly the sole parish church, a very pretty building, charmingly situated with trees all round it, but, alas, white-washed roof and walls.” (Dorothy Wordsworth, Journal of a Tour in the Isle of Man, 10th July 1828, M 10561)

The painting is from a series of works by Mrs Lucy Emma Lynam, born 1834. It is thought that Lucy Emma Lynam painted the works while staying with her daughter and son-in-law on the Isle of Man. Her daughter, also called Lucy Emma, married a Manxman Sidney Alfred Pizey Kermode, who was the Reverend of Onchan (1862-1925).
