Near Ramsey

Date made: 11.08.1854

Description: "The town of Ramsay is in this parish [Lezayre]; the land being hilly and dry, is awkward for tillage and not well adapted for pasture. It makes less butter and cheese than any other parish, considering its extent, which I suppose is sixteen miles round." (John Feltham, A Tour through The Island of Mann in 1797 and 1798, M 09791)

Miss Georgina Gore Currie was the niece of Horatio Powys, Bishop of Sodor and Man from 1854 to 1877. Georgina stayed with the Bishop’s family at their residence, Bishopscourt, north of Kirk Michael. During her time on the Isle of Man, Georgina sketched and painted many Manx scenes including Bishopscourt and its gardens.
