Sash worn by an Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT) marshal
Date made: 1920s
Maker: unknown
Description: This sash was used by a marshal at the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT) races in the 1920s. The sash was provided by tyre manufacturer Dunlop, and marshals were nicknamed 'Dunlops' in consequence.
The sash is of red cotton with the word 'Dunlop' stitched on in white letters.
Many locals and visitors participate in the TT and other motorsport events as marshals. Marshals have always had a crucial role to play in the TT races. Indeed without them the races could not be run. When worn over a white coat this sash was intended to make the marshal highly visible, as orange tabards do today.
