Ballabrooie Viking Sword

Date made: Viking: 800-1265

Description: Found whilst a field was being prepared for potatoes. There are traces of copper on the curved lower guard, which ends in slight knobs, with a straight-sided slightly-tapering blade. The end of the blade is missing, as well as one 'wing' of the hilt. Fragments of wood were said to be found on the blade, perhaps the remains of a scabbard.

X-rays revealed a herring-bone pattern on the blade, an indication that this sword blade was made by using the pattern-welding process.
