John Miller Nicholson captures the beauty of the natural world in a small summer garden, complete with damaged gateposts and wonky gate. It demonstrates him experimenting with a more impressionistic style of painting, something which he spent a lifetime trying to perfect. It differs from many other Nicholson works we have in the collection, in that it is of a more domestic scale and does not feature people or prominent landmarks. Nonetheless, it does show his fascination with trying to capture a single moment in time. It also demonstrates his technical brilliance at achieving realistic perspectives and depth.
