Woollen Framed Medallion Quilt
Date made: c.1855
Maker: Member of Christian Family
Description: Large woollen framed medallion quilt.
The patchwork quilt is a geometric pattern with a central panel of squares set as diamonds. This central panel is surrounded by concentric rectangles in a framing pattern, one of which is composed of large squares set as diamonds, the rest as rectangular patchwork pieces. The majority of the pieces are woollen, with some striped skirt fabrics, as well as tweed and flannel fabrics. The quilt is largely red (since faded to orange) and black (now appearing as green). Some of the patches have been repaired with more modern fabrics, notably a blue and white striped silk fabric.
The quilt is backed with several pieces of white woollen fabric and is hand-quilted with red woollen thread in a zig-zag pattern. The quilt does not contain any filling.
This quilt was made by the donors' grandmother, Mrs Christian, around 1855. The hand-woven woollen fabrics are thought by the donors (the Misses Christians of Port Erin) to have been woven by the Ballafesson weaver.
