Old Laxey
Date made: 1912
Artist: Knox, Archibald
Description: A very muted and almost monochrome watercolour painting by Archibald Knox (1864-1933) of Old Laxey village and harbour with a view through the arches of the bridge up Laxey Glen and to the distant hills in the background. Unlike most of his watercolour sketches which are untitled and unidentified views of the Manx landscape, Knox identified this as 'Old Laxey' and signs and dates the painting 'Old Laxey IOM IX. 1912'. The painting is distinctly different to Knox's other view of Old Laxey produced in September 1912 (IOMMM: 1957-0040), which is far more colourful and takes a more bird's-eye perspective and elevated view of the scene. The painting was given to the Manx Museum in memory of the donor's deceased wife, Winifred Tuckfield, who was an ex-pupil of Archibald Knox and a founder member of the Knox Guild and who had been given the work by the artist.
