Peel
Date made: c.1830-1840
Artist: Johnson, Sarah
Description: Watercolour painting of Peel circa 1830-1840s by Sarah Johnson, from an album of her watercolours.
Sarah Johnson sketched the Isle of Man in the 1830s. We have an album of her Manx watercolour and pencil sketches in the collection. This naive painting, from the album, shows soldiers garrisoned at Peel Castle.
Sarah Johnson is little known as an artist, although she did have one watercolour sketch exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1830. It was common for upper-class women to sketch with watercolours during this period. Women of the aristocracy and gentry were amongst the earliest domestic tourists. It is probable that she came to the Isle of Man as an early tourist.
