Michael Sword Pommel

Date made: Viking: 800-1265

Maker: unknown

Description: The pommel is hollow, five-lobed, has three central distinctive decorated panels with deeply incised designs which match the lower guard and the fragments of the upper guard. The two outermost lobes have different designs and tilt away from the central lobes.

Each lobe is seperated by silver wire - three seperate lots of twisted wire in between each lobe, with the central twist being thicker than the outer twists. The method of fixing the silver wires in place is clearly visible on the underside, where they pass through the main body of the pommel.

All the designs are present on both faces of the pommel.

One of the iron rivets that attached the pommel to the upper guard survives intact on the underside of the pommel.
