Michael Sword Lower Guard Fragment
Date made: Viking: 800-1265
Maker: unknown
Description: This is one of three pieces (2008-0124/5-7) of decorated copper alloy which are probably all that remains of the lower guard of the sword hilt. This triangular shaped hollow piece is probably one terminal of the lower guard of the sword. It is in worse condition than the upper guard and pommel. However, there are still recognisable traces of patterned panels. One panel has a knot-based design with a central diamond shape. The outer panel has faint traces of interlace design. There is an attached copper alloy fragment coming from one side, which may have become attached due to corrosion, or may have been part of the original fabric.
