Record played on Radio Caroline North entitled 'Highway 61 Revisited'
Date made: 1964
Maker: Dylan, Bob
Description: These records once belonged to Bob Stewart, a DJ on Radio Caroline North, the pirate radio station located on a ship moored off Ramsey between 1964 and 1968.
The records are promo singles, distributed by record companies to DJs and not for general release. They are made of black vinyl and each one has a paper label at the centre.
Radio Caroline broke the mould of British broadcasting. The first of the 1960s pirate radio stations, she forced the British authorities to relinquish control of the airwaves and paved the way for modern commercial radio. At the same time she precipitated the most serious political crisis in Manx post-war history, bringing the Isle of Man government into direct conflict with the government at Westminster over who controls Manx domestic policy.
