Rushen Camp internee-made ashtray

Description: An unvarnished concrete or ceramic ashtray with a figure of a gnome in the centre. The gnome figure has been broken at the base and mended in the past. The ashtray was made by a civilian internee in the Rushen Internment Camp during the Second World War.
The ashtray belonged to the donor's aunt, Kathleen Jones, who worked in the Rushen Internment camp as a Manx civilian worker in camp administration.
Gnome ashtray made with a 'concrete' mixture and moulding process perfected by a male internee, Mr Rosenburg. He was interned in the Married Camp at Bradda Glen and one of his sons went to King William's College, the Island's public school. He organised their production by the female internees in the adjacent Rushen Camp.
