Waterfall Pool - Glen Maye I

Date made: 2009

Artist: Maddrell, David

Description: Framed and glazed monoprint of Waterfall pool - Glen Maye. Signed by artist on bottom right corner.

Artist's description:
The zigzag of perpetual white water cascades with light as it descends the gnarly cataract to refresh and ruffle the pool below. The ferns and ivy clad cliff and outcrop give way to the velvet moss slopes of rock below. A scene holding a glimpse of the elemental energy of nature within our glens.

David Madrell is a Manx born artist. He studied art education at Castle Rushen High School, before attending a Foundation Course at the Douglas College of Further Education. In 1990, Maddrell studied a Fine Art Degree at the University of Sunderland. He began his career as a full-time artist in 1999 and had his first solo-exhibition locally, in the summer of 1999, at the Erin Arts Centre, Port Erin - whilst also exhibiting regularly at the Courtyard Gallery (of which Norman Sayle was patron), before taking up an artist residency there. His residency at the Courtyard Gallery allowed the artist to bring his glass work skills to the fore and resulted in his first major exhibition based around his glasswork. In 2001, Maddrell represented the Isle of Man at the InterCeltic Festival in Lorient, Brittany.

As a professional artist Maddrell works in a wide variety of media including both 2D & 3D, pastel, paint, printmaking, and stained glass. More recently digital collage and painting has become his media of choice; this incorporates many aspects honed through the time-honoured traditional techniques. The gravitas of the landscape pastel, the jewel-like colour of the stained-glass panel, the graphic potency of the print is all to be found within his digital works.
