Description: Crate constructed of thin pine panels nailed together. Top of lid has 'Manx Museum Douglas' inscribed in black ink . Two paper labels pinned to the top of the lid - one reads 'WITH CARE' the other 'Gramophone discs - with care. One set in tin boxes to remain sealed for permanent preservation. Second set in cardboard cover to be played at Museum. The Manx Museum Douglas Isle of Man. Sent by Irish Folk lore Commission University College Dublin. 19 1/2 KGs'
This crate was sent to the Manx Museum in March 1949 by the Irish Folklore Commission (IFC) containing the gramohphone recordings of the last native Manx speakers made by the IFC on the Isle of Man in April 1948 by Kevin Danaher.
In 1947 De Valera, Taoiseach of Ireland, visited Cregneash Folk Museum and was so impressed with the wealth of heritage in the Island that he offered the help of the Irish Folklore Commission to the Museum to record this heritage. In 1948 the IFC visited the Isle of Man to record the remaining speakers of the Manx language. Its representative Mr Kevin Danaher made 26 double-sided 12 inch discs of conversations, hymn readings, and recitations from more than a dozen native speakers. His findings highlighted the Island’s wealth of folk-life material, and cemented the idea of conducting a Manx Folk-Life Survey (FLS).
