Isle of Man Government 'Garvey' ten shilling note
Date made: mid 20th century
Maker: unknown
Description: This bank note is from the first series of notes issued by the Isle of Man Government, under Lieutenant Governor R.H.Garvey, in 1961.
The note shows Her Majesty the Queen on one side and a viking ship on the other, and has serial number A114541 together with Garvey's signature.
Garvey came to the Isle of Man determined to improve its economic position. He introduced legislation allowing the Island to set its own domestic tax rates, and removed the power to issue currency from local banks. By vesting the power to produce notes such as these solely with the Manx government (and thereby giving it literally a licence to print money) he allowed it much greater control over the economy of the Island.
