Portrait of Dr Feder

Date made: 1940-1941

Description: A head and shoulders portrait of Dr Feder by the artist, Hermann Fechenbach. The subject would appear to be Dr Max Egon Feder, who is recorded on the 1939 Register as 'Medical doctor retired by Nazi oppression.' He seems to bear duelling scars, as was common among those who attended German universities in the early 20th century.

Collected by Dr Klaus E. Hinrichsen (1912-2004) during his time as an internee in Hutchinson Camp. Hinrichsen was a young art historian who had fled to Britain in the 1930s to avoid Nazi persecution, and found himself interned with some of the leading German refugee artists of the day. He appreciated and recognised the significance of the material being produced in Hutchinson Camp, and began to collect and exhibit pieces within the camp. The resulting collection contains examples of the camps leading artists such as Erich Kahn, Hermann Fechenbach, Helmut Weissenborn, Bruno Ahrends, Fritz Kraemer and Paul Henning.

Herman Fechenbach (1897-1986), was a painter and graphic artist born into a Jewish family in Württemberg, Germany. He fought and was severely wounded in the First World War. He studied in Stuttgart, Munich and Florence then travelled widely before settling in Stuttgart in 1924–5. He produced a number of wood engravings on Old Testament subjects and was forbidden to exhibit by the Nazis in 1933 and fled to Palestine in 1938. Fechenbach arrived in Britain in 1939, where he worked as a painter and wood engraver to raise funds to help his remaining family escape from Germany. He was interned at Hutchinson Camp on the Isle of Man, and went on hunger strike in protest. He produced a series of linocuts entitled 'My Impressions as Refugee'.
