Internee-made chess piece
Date made: 1940-1941
Description: A handcarved wooden chess piece made by Hans Schwarz, an internee in Peveril Internment Camp, Peel, in 1940-41. The chess piece is of the queen and is a female figure with long hair, her head cocked to one side and a crown on her head. Each chess piece appears to have been modelled on a specific individual, possibly an officer's wife or female member of staff.
