Ciborium used in religious ceremonies in Knockaloe Camp by Father Thomas Crookall
Date made: late 19th century
Maker: unknown
Description: This ciborium was used by Father Thomas Crookall, a priest at St Mary's church in Douglas, to conduct Holy Communion services in Knockaloe Camp. The spiritual welfare of the internees was an important consideration; religion was a major part of life for most people in this era anyway, and in the traumatic conditions of internment away from home and family, it would have taken on added significance. Crookall was highly regarded by the internees, and many continued to write to him after the war, up to his death in the 1930s.
