Description: .An oil on board portrait of a Second World War army officer in uniform. Two pips on shoulder and First World War medal ribbons visible. Inscribed with artist's name 'Grixoni' and the title 'portrait of Lieut. Schurig Douglas Sept 1940'. A further inscription indicates that this painting was intended for an exhibition in London when the artist was released from internment.
Count Mario Grixoni was a London based portrait artist, specialising in studies of the aristocracy and senior military and political figures. The 1939 Register shows him as living at 6A Holbein Place Chelsea, and shows that he was an ARP Warden before being interned. MNH database shows him as held in Metropole Internment Camp, August 1940. He was released in November 1940. He died in London in 1946 aged 67.
Alexander George Schurig was born on the Isle of Wight in 1896, the son of a German-born hotelier. He was commissioned from the Public Schools Battalion into the Somerset Light Infantry in 1917. In August 1940 he was commissioned again, into the Auxiliary Military Pioneer Corps. in 1942 he transferred to the Kings Shropshire Light infantry. Schurig died at Shrewsbury in December 1966.
