Silver lustre jug

Date made: early 18th century

Description: Lustre Jug, said to be 200 years old.

P. M. C. Kermode, first Director of the Manx Museum, described the jug in the Museum Register: 'Jug. Silver and white resist lustre doves on a pale background. The handle gone & replaced by a band of iron. C 1730.'

Research suggests that the technique for producing silver lustre was not developed until the 1790s, casting some doubt upon P. M. C. Kermode's dating of this object. Birds and foliage was a design usually associated with Yorkshire potteries.
