Calf Island from "the Castles"
Date made: 1877
Description: “On the highest part of this Island stands the ruins of an ancient house, called Bushel’s House, in which a man named Bushel is said to have lived in seclusion several years during the reign of James I, to ascertain, by practical experience, if a life of extreme simplicity and abstinence would promote longevity. He lived during his experiment; but, having died within the ordinary age of other men, his philosophy was of course needlessly exercised.” (William Bennet, Sketches of the Isle of Man, 1829, M 00896)
Pencil sketch from the sketchbook of Arthur Henderson, 1877, when aged about 13.
