Peel Castle

Description: "This place was seldom visited by the tourist until Sir Walter Scott stirred the nation’s curiosity by the publication of ‘Peveril on the Peak’. Since then, large numbers of visitors annually flock to view the ancient stronghold, and to look with their own eyes on the scenes of incidents made familiar by the Romanticist.” (Dr Robert Paterson, Manx Antiquities, 1863, M 02321)

Miss Georgina Gore Currie was the niece of Horatio Powys, Bishop of Sodor and Man from 1854 to 1877. Georgina stayed with the Bishop’s family at their residence, Bishopscourt, north of Kirk Michael. During her time on the Isle of Man, Georgina sketched and painted many Manx scenes including Bishopscourt and its gardens.
