Date made: 3rd August 1868
Artist: Wilson, Mary Elinor
Description: “The Calf of Man is separated from the main land by a very narrow rocky channel, through which the tide rushes with vast impetuosity…through the whole of this solitary spot there is no human vestige, except a mouldering shepherd’s cot." (Nathaniel Jefferys, A Descriptive and Historical Account of the Isle of Man, 1809, M 00904)
A pencil sketch from the sketchbook of Mary Elinor Wilson, daughter of Reverend Edward Wilson (the first headmaster of King William's College). A note accompanying the sketchbook states: "Mary Elinor Wilson went on tour to Switzerland and Norway with Alice Temple Chevalier in 1854. Alice Temple Chevalier was the daughter of Temple Chevalier, Vicar of Esh near Durham and Professor of Astronomy and Hebrew at Durham University.
