Castle Mona
Date made: n.d.
Artist: unknown artist
Description: "We passed by the Duke of Athol’s house which he is building at the foot of a hill and just beyond high water mark. It is surprising that such a situation should be chosen, when by building the house a few hundred yards back there would have been a fine lawn in front and a more extensive prospect, as it is necessary to build a wall in imitation of a fort to break the violence of the waves.” (Tour of a lady's voyage from England to Ireland 1802, MS 05875)
This mounted lithographic view is part of Sarah Jametta Crigan's sketchbook. The lithograph is cut from T. Ashe's sketchbook, 1825 (the series engraved by Haghe) annotated in the same hand and ink as signature on cover (1825). Sarah Jametta was the daughter of Claudius Crigan (Bishop of Sodor and Man 1784-1813) and author of 'Memoirs of Major Charles Crigan' (her brother) published in 1864.
