Kirby, Seat of Colonel Wilkes

Date made: n.d.

Artist: unknown artist

Description: “Mr Taylor [Colonel Mark Wilkes] is married to a Daughter of Major Taubman and is making great improvements in his lands here: he has just finished building a large house which may be admired for its singularity of appearance, I cannot say elegance. Passing over a small bridge across the Black Water, we arrived at Kirk Braddan.” (Samuel Dukinfield Swarbreck, Tour through the Isle of Man by Captain William Latham, July 1815)

This mounted lithographic view is part of Sarah Jametta Crigan's sketchbook. The lithograph is cut from T. Ashe's sketchbook, 1825 (the series engraved by Haghe) annotated in the same hand and ink as signature on cover (1825). Sarah Jametta was the daughter of Claudius Crigan (Bishop of Sodor and Man 1784-1813) and author of 'Memoirs of Major Charles Crigan' (her brother) published in 1864.
