Elm

Description: A set of herbarium specimens collected by Peter Davey and Philippa Tomlinson supporting several scientific publications relating to the diversity of Ulmus sp. (Elms) on the Isle of Man, which also includes DNA analysis. Among them is a sheet with a specimen of Wych Elm.

Wych Elm is the only original, native species of Elm found in the British Isles, although there are other species that were brought here in later years. Ironically, the English Elm, which was devastated by Elm disease, is thought to have been brought over by the Romans, and each tree is actually a clone of the original. There is a wonderful tunnel of 100 year old elm trees between St. Marks and The Braaid
