Pencil sketch from internment camp
Date made: 1940
Description: Pencil sketch produced by the donor's father Alfred Schwarzchild whilst en route to the Isle of Man, 1940 (he was a professional artist, forced to flee Germany by the Nazis). Shows a group of tents. Produced on lined exercise paper with a rectangular section cut out. Plain reverse.
Schwarzchild was born in 1874. His HO396 index card indicates that in 1939 he was initially exempted from internment as a refugee and on grounds of age (home address shown as 55 Fordington Road, Muswell Hill, London.). However he was arrested and interned 21.6.1940. He was released 8.9.1940.
