Pencil sketch from internment camp

Date made: 1940

Description: Pencil sketches produced by the donor's father Alfred Schwarzchild whilst interned on the Isle of Man, 1940 (he was a professional artist, forced to flee Germany by the Nazis). Group of pencil sketches on both sides of a piece of lined exercise paper. One side shows possibly gate of Hutchinson Camp, with ten portraits, all named. Discernable names are Lukowitz, also Fritz Wiener. Some names appear to also have place of residence, e.g. 'aus Warschau' from Warsaw. Reverse shows a further 17 portraits, again all named.

Background:
There were many celebrated modern artists interned on the Isle of Man during the Second World War, they were forced to flee Nazi Germany as the regime suppressed so called ‘degenerate’ art. Jewish artists were doubly vulnerable. Manx National Heritage have an internationally significant collection of works created in the internment camps, with many of those artists going on to have high profile careers after the war.
