Millicent Trehy

Date made: 1979

Description: Portrait of Millicent Trehy by Manx artist David Swinton. Widnes born Millicent Trehy and her husband Gerard Trehy moved to the Isle of Man with their family in 1967 to start a new life as hoteliers. With no prior experience they first leased, then bought, the Collingwood Boarding House on Clarence Terrace, Douglas. They ran the hotel from 1967-1979. 'Millice' ran the kitchen and was known to be a fabulous cook and home baker. Both Gerard and Millice were very well known in the 1960s and 1970s as hoteliers, and became central figures in the Manx hotel trade. Millice died in 2018.

Artist David Swinton was a former school teacher at Ballakermeen High School. He has exhibited at the Sunday Times Watercolour Competition, the Laing and the Royal Watercolour Society as well as a number of solo exhibitions in both the UK and the Isle of Man. He painted the portrait of Millice just prior to their retirement from the Collingwood in 1979. It has been in the family ever since.
