Sea Cross, Sea Cross, Sea Cross
Date made: 2012
Artist: Kelly, Edward
Description: Sea Cross, Sea Cross, Sea Cross was exhibited as part of Edward Kelly's show 'Island Paintings' at the House of Manannan in 2012. Edward Kelly has made over 200 artworks on the Isle of Man, and considers 'Sea Cross, Sea Cross, Sea Cross' the major painting of his Island Series.
In 2022 he wrote:
"Sea Cross, Sea Cross, Sea Cross' came to life as fifteen seperate works on paper titles - Divided Sea, Z Waves, Scarlet Point, Norse Cross, Maughold Lonan Celtic, Sandulf's Cross, Slab Andreas Thorwalds, Cross Slab Andreas, Spiral Wave Seaweed, Pebble, Island Fells - stretched out as an epic poem. The dance of life and death contrasting sea, land, wind and standing cross slabs. All originate whilst working outside studying the Manx Crosses, the wildness and crashing seas. The internal rhythms of the carved stone echoing the swirls of blasting wind and sea."
In an introduction to his Island Paintings (2012), Edward Kelly stated:
‘I have worked for many years in the bracing wind off the Irish Sea, painting whilst clinging to the cliffs, where the great elemental force of sea meets land on the Island of Man, persisting in a somewhat insane belief that these majestic elements can be related with humble marks on paper. Christianity arrived in the Isle of Man in the seventh century. People raised carved stone crosses for the dead. These are not mournful they celebrate life itself… I struggled on this Island to capture a spirit of place.’
