Wreck of the Peveril at Laxey
Date made: 1891
Description: Oil on canvas panting depicting the wreck of the schooner 'Peveril' of Peel at Laxey on 13 October 1891. This incident was reported in Manx newspapers. The residents of Laxey were gathered on the beach for the auction of the contents of the 'Flora' wrecked just a week before when someone shouted that another vessel was in trouble in the high winds and heavy seas. Mr Wales the Harbour Master at Laxey and Captain Morton, the Pier Master both received certificates of appreciation from the RNLI for their efforts in wading out into the sea to get a line to the Peveril. All four of the crew were rescued including a man of 70.
The artist was the uncle of the donor and it is believed was an eyewitness to the incident. A family tree diagram was included on the original reverse board (photo in object file) which shows the donor and his brother descended from Isaac Quayle. His younger brother was the artist, their parents being Joseph Quayle and Ann Clague. The 1891 census shows the artist as the 9 year old son of a General Labourer, living at 3 South Laxey Hill. He emigrated to South Africa c1902 where it is believed that he died.
