Puchased by the donor, Gillian Ross, at the private view of a Nancy Corkish Exhibition held at the Courtyard Gallery, St Johns. We are very grateful to Gillian for kindly donating this painting to the National Art Collection.
Yorkshire born Nancy Corkish moved to the Isle of Man in 1957 and attended adult art education classes at the Isle of Man College of Further Education in the 1960s. Her tutor at that time was the noted Manx artist, Norman Sayle, who had a huge impact on her artistic life, both questioning and challenging her to extend her range and style. She believed that this proved an invaluable grounding for her subsequent career.
Nancy specialised in watercolours and pastels, seeking to capture the Island's unusual light and colour formations. Her paintings were always in high demand, with sell out shows whenever she exhibited. She lived at Cregneash Village, with her husband and fellow artist David Byrne. They were well known for working and exhibiting together, having to take turns using a single kitchen table to work in their small traditional cottage. Living at Cregneash provided unrivalled views of the Calf of Man and the Sound, which continued to be a source of inspiration for both artists.
