North Quay (Douglas)

Description: North Quay in Douglas is on the east coast of the Isle of Man (NGR 23822 47528). Brown's Guide to the Isle of Man of 1900 says, "Beyond the British Hotel, the Quay is bordered by a number of fine shops, built upon a part of the improved area; and at the farther end of these buildings, at the corner of Ridgeway Street...is the New St. Matthew's Church, an edifice in the Early English style, and a much needed addition to the few public buildings of Douglas. Still proceeding up the Quay, we leave the improved parts of Old Douglas behind us, and pass along a narrower roadway lined by houses and shops of the old unimproved type, most of them dating back to the last century, and containing many reminiscences of that wild time...It is well to remind ourselves that, behind these unattractive buildings, there is a district of the old town also going back to the rough old smuggling times - a labyrinth of lane like streets, and houses placed in them without order or arrangement."
