The Palace (Douglas)
Description: The Palace, now demolished, stood on the promenade in Douglas on the east coast of the Isle of Man (NGR 23863 47691). Brown's Guide to the Isle of Man of 1900 says, "...an immense pavilion, of light, but extremely elegant appearance, capable of holding 10,000 persons, for concert and other purposes, and with a dancing floor large enough to receive 4,000 couples at one time. In this monstre pavilion - one of the largest and best appointed in the world, dancing assemblies are held every evening, from 7:30 to 11.0, during the season; except on Sunday evenings, when from 8:15 to 10.0, grand sacred concerts are given, at which the leading professionals appear before crowded audiences, numbering in the height of the season 6,000 to 8,000 persons. Immediately adjoining the great pavilion, and connected with it by a covered promenade, is the Opera House; a well arranged theatre, holding some 1,500 persons, in which variety entertainments, operettas, and extravaganzas are given in the evening, thus offering a wide choice of amusement at one time to the patrons of The Palace."
