Glover's illustrated guide and visitors' companion through the Isle of Man, 1875 says “…streets clean and well lighted, with terraces neat and ornamental, it has for years been a favourite resort of those who seek - in the restoration of their health - quietness and repose. Its hotels and boarding houses are first-class, and everything that can add to the comfort of those who may for a time make it their temporary home, can be procured.” (p.106.)
