The Manks Mercury was the first Manx newspaper, published on 27th November 1792. Produced in English by English journalists at a time when many Manx people wrote and spoke only Manx Gaelic, it was aimed at the small number of non-Manx residents and provided them with international news at a cheap price, when imported newspapers were subject to taxes and stamp duty.
