The photograph has been taken from an advertisement in the Borough Guide to Castletown 1910-11. The front wall of the shop has now been rebuilt. The location is Malew Street in Castletown and the shop is that of G. Swales, watchmaker and jeweler. Mr Swales worked in Wolverhampton where he learnt his trade then moved to Sheffield where he married, but his wife took ill so they came to the Isle of Man for her health. Living initially at Derbyhaven, following his wife's death he moved to Castletown and set up business. Photography was a hobby as well as selling photographic materials. He is believed to be the man who saved the old clock in Castle Rushen by repairing it. He had two sons, Vere Lawrence, who set up as a watchmaker, jeweler and photographer in Port St Mary and Teddy, who joined a shipping company.
