Chapter 8 has an historical account of changes in the Manx language; differences between Manx and other Gaelic spelling systems; lack of Gaelic literary patronage among the Manx /English upper class; features of the Traditionary Ballad; Book of Common Prayer (Phillips); Ballad of Illiam Dhone; 18th century literature, Moore's 'Manx Ballads' , Clague's 'Cooinaghtyn Manninagh' and Edward Faragher's prose writing. John Gell's 'Cooinaghtyn my Aegid as Cooinaghtyn Elley', together with the 'Skeealaght' stories are given as twentieth century examples of written Manx. Grammar and lexicography are mentioned, as is the relationship of Manx Gaelic to the Gaelic languages of Scotland and Ireland. Characteristics of Manx in common with other Celtic languages are given.
