Notes: From Unknown Journal, with engravings of Tower of Refuge; Sir William Hillary, The Famous Connister Tower in Calm Weather; Article about the founding of Lifeboats and Sir William Hillary, it was in 1823 when he was living in at Fort Anne, Douglas, Isle of Man, was struck with the terrible loss of life on our rock-bound coast. He could see Connister Rock, which proved to be the undoing of many a ship. A year later he called a meeting in London, and the National Lifeboat Institution was formed, to be supported by voluntary donations and subscriptions The Tower of Refuge was built on the reef of Connister Rock, built by Jon Welsh and the first stone being laid by Sir William and Lady Hillary in 1832.
