Biography: Mary Rigby Halton was born in Douglas in 1896. In 1915 she passed a course in First Aid Nursing, and joined the Voluntary Aid Detachment. Women in this organisation were not fully trained nurses, but worked in war hospitals alongside those who were. They acted as auxiliaries, feeding wounded soldiers, changing dressings and undertaking other important work. Mary nursed at Denmark Hill Hospital, London, before returning to the Isle of Man at the end of the war. (Image ref: PG/14476/1).
