'Edith Levy'

Date(s): 2019

Creator(s): Thomas, Carin

Scope & Content: Biographical details collated by the daughter of Kaethe Schwarzloh, lifelong friend of Edith. The two women shared a double room and double bed at Snaefell Hydro Hotel, Rushen internment camp from 30 May 1940 until their release in 1941.

Carin recounts details of Edith's life after the Second World War, emigration to Canada and contact between the families. Kaethe died in July 1998 (aged 86) and Edith in June 2003 (aged 89). In 2019 Carin travelled to Canada and met with two of Edith's children, Vivien and Lonia. She quotes Lonia's words, 'Two lives, your mother (6 January 1913 to 12 July 1998) and my mother (12 March 1914 to 10 June 2003) intertwined for many years and although their friendship was born of sadness, there was also beauty in their stories. Out of the past strength of their bond, a solid foundation was created upon which ongoing friendships of the next generation were built'.
