Biography: Frank Lightowler (1882- 1959) was a professional artist who had a studio at Ballaquane Mansion in Peel with his wife, Nellie, also an artist. He later lived in Bridge Street in Peel.
His work was widely exhibited in London, Liverpool and Manchester and it was said he was especially fond of portrait painting. Despite his love of painting, he was principally a sculptor and we have a number of his portrait busts in the art collection. They include sculptures of some of the key people connected with the birth of the Manx Museum, namely Philip Moore Callow Kermode, Josephine 'Cushag' Kermode and William Cubbon.
Lightowler also worked at King William's College on the Isle of Man, carved The Guthrie memorial on the TT Course, a bust of Walter Jenkinson, bass relief of St Patrick for Jurby Church and the Royal Artillery badge on the former headquarters on Tromode Road. There is an article about the artusts in the Isle of Man Victorian Society newsletter number 96 pp 34-39 (February 2014)
