Description: oil on board painting of a Lieutenant Commander in Naval uniform and medals including the OBE and First World War trio, along with Jubilee medal 1935.

The subject is Lieutenant Commander A.J. Parkes who was ADC to Governors: Sir William Fry 1919-26, Sir Claude Hill 1926-33, Sir Montague Butler 1933-37 and Earl Granville 1937-45. Parkes was apparently born in Leicester, and seems to have come to the Isle of Man at the end of the First World War. On 29 June 1915 he was promoted from Chief Gunner to Lieutenant for gallantry in action with Fleet Minesweepers. Died at Ballaugh in 1957 aged 84.
