Manx 'Square Sail' Fishing Boat

Date made: 20th century

Description: Scale model, rigged, of an 18th century Manx 'square sail' fishing boat, based on the representation of one in the print of Thurot and Elliott's squadrons in Ramsey Bay, 1760. The type was closely similar to the Shetland sixerns and foureens which Mr Shewan and his father habitually made during the past century. The model represents a 'squaresail' 30 foot length overall. Scale about 1 inch = 1 foot.

NB there is no one named Shewan on 1911 census or Manx birth/death records. A mistranscription? [Came from Lerwick, Shetland according to the MNH register]
